How to Repent in Islam: Tawbah After a Mistake

What tawbah (repentance) is, its conditions, what to do when you've wronged someone, how to keep going after slipping again, and du'as for forgiveness.

Every person slips. You might miss prayers, lose your temper, go back to an old habit, or do something you swore you'd never do again. Many new Muslims feel this sharply: "I was supposed to have a fresh start, and I've already ruined it."

You haven't. Islam expects human beings to make mistakes — and gives a clear, hopeful way back. It's called tawbah, which literally means "returning".

Allah loves those who return

The Prophet ﷺ said that all the children of Adam make mistakes, and the best of those who make mistakes are those who repent. And Allah says:

Az-Zumar 39:53

Read that again slowly. It is addressed to people who have gone too far — and they are told not to despair.

The Prophet ﷺ also taught that Allah stretches out His hand at night to forgive those who sinned in the day, and in the day to forgive those who sinned at night. Allah's mercy is not reluctant; it is waiting for you.

The conditions of sincere repentance

Scholars summarise sincere tawbah in three parts, and a fourth when other people are involved:

  1. 1Stop. Leave the sin. Repentance while continuing on purpose isn't real repentance.
  2. 2Regret. Feel genuinely sorry before Allah. The Prophet ﷺ said that regret is repentance.
  3. 3Resolve. Intend sincerely not to go back to it.
  4. 4Make it right with people. If you wronged someone — took their money, hurt their reputation, lied about them — return what you can, apologise where it's wise, and ask their forgiveness.

The Qur'an calls for this kind of sincere returning:

At-Tahrim 66:8

What if I do it again?

This is the question that troubles people most. If you repent sincerely and later slip again, repent again. Your earlier repentance wasn't "fake" just because you were weak afterwards. Scholars point to a hadith in which a man sins, repents, sins again, repents again — and each time Allah forgives him because he knows he has a Lord who forgives.

The danger is not in falling; it is in giving up and deciding you are beyond help. That feeling of hopelessness is something Muslims are taught to resist.

Practical steps

  • Make wudu and pray two units, then ask Allah for forgiveness. Some scholars call this the prayer of repentance, based on a hadith reported from Abu Bakr.
  • Speak to Allah in your own words. Say what you did, that you regret it, and what you need.
  • Change what makes the sin easy. Delete the app, avoid the place, change the route home, tell a trusted friend.
  • Follow a bad deed with a good one. The Prophet ﷺ taught that a good deed wipes out a bad one — give charity, help someone, pray an extra prayer.
  • Don't announce your private sins. Islam encourages you to keep what Allah has covered between you and Him. Repent privately; speak to a teacher or counsellor in confidence if you need help.

Words of forgiveness to learn

The simplest: Astaghfirullah — "I seek Allah's forgiveness." The Prophet ﷺ would say it many times a day.

The Sayyid al-Istighfar (the best way to ask forgiveness), which the Prophet ﷺ taught to say morning and evening:

Allahumma anta rabbi, la ilaha illa ant, khalaqtani wa ana 'abduk, wa ana 'ala 'ahdika wa wa'dika mastata't, a'udhu bika min sharri ma sana't, abu'u laka bi ni'matika 'alayy, wa abu'u bi dhanbi, faghfir li, fa innahu la yaghfirudh-dhunuba illa ant.

O Allah, You are my Lord; there is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant, and I keep Your covenant and promise as best I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your blessings upon me, and I acknowledge my sin, so forgive me, for none forgives sins except You.

And the du'a of Adam and Hawwa (Eve) after their mistake:

Al-A'raf 7:23

Even better than before

The Qur'an describes people who repent, believe and do good, and says Allah replaces their bad deeds with good ones:

Al-Furqan 25:70

Your past mistakes can become the very thing that brings you closer to Allah. For more on starting again, see Are My Past Sins Forgiven? and When Your Iman Feels Low.

Quick answers

What are the conditions of tawbah?

Stop the sin, sincerely regret it, resolve not to return to it, and if it involved another person's rights, make things right with them.

Will Allah forgive me if I keep repeating the same sin?

Keep repenting sincerely each time. Scholars cite hadith showing that Allah forgives a servant who repeatedly returns to Him; the danger is giving up hope.

Is there a special prayer for repentance?

Many scholars mention praying two units after wudu and then asking Allah for forgiveness, based on a hadith reported from Abu Bakr.

Do I have to confess my sins to someone?

No. Repentance is between you and Allah, and Islam encourages keeping private sins private. You may speak to a teacher or counsellor in confidence if you need help.
